 What is hospital ?

Hospital derived from the letin word hospitalis which comes from hospes , meaning of hospital is host.

Oldest day, hospitals are guest house for homeless people and treatment centre. But this time , the chief function of hospital is to provide care and treatment to sick. 

Definition of hospital 🏥

According to W.H.O. = Hospital is an integral part is a social and medical organization, the function of which is to provide for the population, the complete health care both curative and preventive and whose out patient services reach out to the family and it's home environment the hospital is also a centre for bio-social research .

Hospital is an institution for the care cure and treatment of sick person and for the study of the disease and for the training of the doctors and nurses.(medical dictionary)

Classification of hospital 

Many types of hospital according to work , bed capacity , management, system, and medicines.

According to bed capacity =  the hospital is  3 types 

      Small bed capacity = In this type 50-100 bed available in the hospital.

      Medium bed capacity=  In this type 101- 300 bed available in the hospital.

     Large bed capacity = In this type more then 300 bed available in the hospital.

According to ownership/ control = 

1) corporate hospital = this hospital run by the many companies.

2) private hospital = these hospital run by the one individual doctor or group of doctors.

3) government hospital = these are run by central government or state government .

According to medicine = 

1) long term care hospital = In this type, the treatment provide for long time .

       Ex. = Cancer hospital 

2) short term hospital = In this type, the treatment provide for short duration .

       Ex. = Appendicitis

According to objective = 

 1) Training hospital = In this hospital provide the training for the medical students.

 2) specialization hospital = These hospital treat the specific disease.

      Ex. = Cardio hospital 

               Cancer hospital 

According to management = 

1) union government hospital = hospital run by union government of India. 

      Ex. = Railway hospital

               Military hospital 

2) state government hospital = Hospital run by the state government .

      Ex. = C.H.C.

3) Autonomous hospital = Run by the himself 

      Ex. = AIIMS New Delhi

Hospital departments = 

1) out patient department ( O.P.D.) = In o.p.d provide investigation and curative care without admitting patients. O.P.D is window of the hospital.

   Scope of O.P.D. - consultation investigation , preventive and promotive.

Location of O.P.D. = O.P.D should be located at the entrance of the hospital.

2) In patient department ( I.P.D) = 

I.P.D is the heart of the hospital .It can be divided into:- 

a) ward and room :- I.C.U

                                    -Intermitted ward

                                    - Isolation ward 

b) nurses station 

c) dietary facilities

d) sanitary facilities

3) Medical department = The medical department has various clinical services they are medicine , surgery , gynaecology , pediatrics, orthopedic , neurology, cardiology etc

4) Nursing department = The nursing department consist of nursing service and nursing education .

The primary purpose of nursing service is to provide comprehensive safe, effective and we'll organised nursing care .

5) pharmacy department = The pharmacy department has  responsibility for selecting , purchasing , storing all the drugs and medication.

6) Radiology department = It provide redio graphic , x - ray , CT scan, MRI , ultrasonography.

7) pathological department = pathological department have many laboratories.

- Blood bank lab.

8) Medical record department =

 O.P.D. record - 5 year.

I.P.D record - 10 year.

Medical record - 15 year.

The functional medical record department divided into reception, medical recovery lab. Statistical section.

coordination of home and institutional care .

- Availablity of physicians and health care provider.

- Availability of care for 24 hours a day 

- open communication between staff and clients and family .
